Danish health insurance

Public health insurance in Denmark means that you are entitled to get medical treatment at the doctor and at the hospital for free. Commuters, who live in Sweden and work in Denmark, are normally entitled to healthcare in both countries.

The public Danish health insurance

With a public health insurance in Denmark, you can be examined and treated by both medical practitioners and at the hospital free of charge. Unlike Sweden, you normally don't pay a patient fee to see the doctor. You can also get subsidies for medicine, dental care, physiotherapy, foot therapy, chiropractic care and psychological care.

Danish healthcare system is divided into two insurance groups, but does not affect treatment or fees as such. Your Danish personal health card will inform in which insurance group you are.

Note; healthcare in Denmark is free, however practitioners, specialists, dentists, dental nurses and physiotherapists set the price of treatment themselves. If the cost of treatment exceeds the reimbursement from the specific region you belong to, you must pay the difference.

In some clinics, the reimbursement is deducted directly from the bill, and you pay the rest of the doctor's fee. In other clinics, you pay the whole bill first, and you can then get a reimbursement from your local authority where your Danish employer is situated.
